What is FiOS?
FiOS is a service offered by Verizon that currently provides high-speed internet, tv/video programming, and telephone service. The word FiOS is most easily translated to Fiber Optic Service. The services provided by FiOS are delivered by a single fiber optic cable that connects to the household.
Can I get FiOS?
FiOS requires an all new fiber optic network that has only been installed in certain areas. If you've seen Verizon trucks doing a lot of work in your area, there's a good chance FiOS is or will soon be available to order. The only way to know for sure is to check your telephone number or address at Verizon's website.
Why should I consider FiOS?
FiOS represents one of the most technologically advanced services available to consumers. Currently it provides the fastest internet connection available (to residences), premium tv programming, and full-featured telephone service. The fiber optic connection will allow an almost unlimited number of future service offerings that may become available. FiOS is also competitively priced when compared to cable and satellite services. In most cases FiOS is actually less expensive to closest comparable services.
How fast is FiOS?
Currently the slowest connection offered to new customers is 10Mbps down and 2Mbps up.
How much does FiOS cost?
FiOS internet service pricing currently ranges from $39.95 and up. FiOS TV service starts at $42.99 for the premier programming package. Equipment rental and premium channels are extra. Verizon phone service ranges from $10 to $50 per month. Any one or all of theses services may be purchased. Multiple services usually result in a bundle discount.
How is FiOS installed?
If FiOS has been installed in your area, you will be able to order FiOS from Verizon. After ordering, a fiber optic cable will be brought to your house (buried or aerial) PRIOR to your scheduled installation day. This is done outside and does not usually require the homeowner to be home. On the scheduled day of installation, a Verizon technician will install the necessary equipment at your premises. This process takes anywhere from 2-8 hours depending on the services ordered and the difficulty of the particular installation.
