I am currently using Dish Network, Vz phone, Vz DSL and am considering switching to FIOs triple play. My home is approximately 5 years old and was wired using a Vz SmartHouse panel in the basement — basically all the wiring for Cat 5 and cable into a central hub. When Dish ran the service the disconnected the wires for 4 locations in the house and plugged them into a splitter for service.

Four questions:

Can the FIOs installer utilize the Smarthouse panel to run the signal throughout the entire house so I can move the boxes where desired without signal degradation — I plan to stick with four locations, but would like the option to move the boxes around?

Should I use CAT 5 or cable for these runs?

Can I use the signal without Vz provided box on an analogue TV, say in a guest room, and get a minimum number of channels?

Can I use the signal with just a DataCard inserted into my new Pioneer HDTV, without the need for a Vz furnished box? If yes, where can I get the card, what sort of card is needed?

Thanks, Jay

1. I would think that Verizon installer could use the SmartHouse panel. If he determines that the signal loss is too great, then it may be necessary to disconnect some of the cable runs. If that is the case, then changing box location would be as simple as disconnecting the current run to the desired run. Coaxial distribution is done through simple splitters.

2. Cat 5 is only required at the router location. If you install the router at the panel location, you would be able to use the cat5 runs to distribute a LAN network.

3. Yes, the coaxial cable distribution broadcast the local channels via analog, so any tv can pickup this signal.

4. Currently I believe you must use a cable card provided by Verizon (lease for $2.95/month). The only problem with this method is that Video On Demand will not work. VOD is provided via IP protocol which is not compatible with current cable cards.
